Mesa/Boogie Mark V 6L6 vs EL34 Tubes
Video comparison of both tubes in a Mark V amplifier
The Mesa/Boogie Mark V amplifier is capable of running both 6L6 and EL34 power tubes. Our video demonstration compares how both sets of tubes sound running side by side in an A/B comparison. The results are surprising!
To my ears there isn't a tremendous difference between power tubes in this amp. There is a change, but it is subtle. A common misconception is that EL34's will make your amp sound more like a British Marshall. I think this video really shows how that is NOT the case!
The power tubes add that last bit of tonal coloration, and it's simply not enough to completely change the voice of an amp. I don't really hear the EL34's 'adding' mids, but just changing slightly where the midrange emphasis is. It seems to be slightly clearer, but again these changes are very subtle.
Some players will enjoy one over the other, and that's why there is a choice. Choices and options are always a good thing, and you can choose for yourself which tubes belong in your amp with some careful listening and attention to how the amp responds to your playing. Trust your ears and your hands... not internet hype!
