Jazz Masterclass

Having moved back to his hometown of Rapid City, SD in 2020, South Dakota-born trumpeter Alexander Massa has spent the past 12 years in New Orleans, Winnipeg, Chicago, and Iceland. He has toured around the world as a sideman and a bandleader, with his projects being featured in Iceland, Spain, and throughout the United States. He has had the privilege to perform, tour, record and collaborate with hundreds of individuals and groups in these places. A shortlist: The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, The Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Vintage Trouble, Helen Gillet & TEPHRA, The Nth Power, Nikki Glaspie, Brian Haas, Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, The Trumpet Mafia, Jon Roniger and The Good For Nothin’ Band, Mike Dillon, The Revivalists, Samantha Fish, The Treme Brass Band, and Galactic. In addition to performing, Alexander writes music for film – documentaries, shorts, features, and experimental film – and recently completed his graduate diploma from the Film Scoring Academy of Europe based in Sofia, Bulgaria.

In partnership with Haggerty’s, Alex is very excited to present a two part class on jazz improvisation on September 1st & 8th.

This two-class course will focus on foundational aspects of jazz improvisation, song forms, theory, and active listening. All ages are encouraged to attend, and a basic handling of your instrument is strongly recommended.

Price for both sessions is $20, and is non-refundable.
